General Douglas MacArthur relieved of command in Korea.
Puerto Rico becomes a United States commonwealth.
Winston Churchill becomes Prime Minister for the second time.
Electricity generated from nuclear power for the first time.
Mass production of penicillin and streptomycin reaches records.

New York Yankees win the World Series over the New York Giants, 4-2
Joe Dimaggio retires from the New York Yankees while Mickey Mantle starts his career.
